Summer Gardening Tips

June 3, 2019

There’s a lot to look forward to in summer, fun barbeque sessions with friends or long vacation trips accompanied by a yearning for delicious ice-creams; there is a certain charm about summer that keeps us longing for this season all year long.

Summer is also a welcoming period for those who are into gardening. This is after all the time when plants can finally enjoy the warmth and sunlight and grow to their full potential.

That’s why we are bringing you some very useful summer gardening tips that you can follow to keep your plants healthy and green in the hot months.

1) Budding Plants
There are certain plants like camellia that start budding in the summertime. If you have any such budding plants in your garden, make sure that you provide them with enough nutrition, or else they will dry out. Mulch the area around the plants and water them deeply at least thrice a week to avoid this problem.

2) Proper Shade
Move all your potted plants to a shaded area to protect them from the harsh heat of the sun. If you have large plants in your garden, cover them with a light mesh. Also, lightly mulch the surrounding areas to stop the soil from overheating. Another option is to put the standing potted plants into saucers filled with sand and keep the sand wet.

3) Timely Watering
Watering plants regularly and at a particular time will save them from going dry. The best time to water your plants is when the temperature is comparatively low, i.e., early in the morning before 10. If you water plants in the afternoon, let the foliage dry before watering them again. This will stop mildew from building up.

4) Pruning
Make sure to give your shrubs and plants a haircut. Also, remove wilted flowers from the plants as they may hinder the formation of new flowering shoots. With dead flowers gone, plants can fully focus on nurturing the fresh flowers. Faded flowers also tend to shed seeds that later grow into self-seeding plants and occupy unnecessary space in the garden.

5) Fertilizing
Make sure that your plants are getting all the nutrients they need. You can add a soluble fertilizer to the water and then water your plants deeply. The fertilizing process should be done at least once a week. Use only half of the fertilizer of what is recommended, as over fertilizing causes distress to plants. You can also use organic compost made from green waste at home.

6) Pest Control
Keep useful insects like ladybugs, bees, and praying mantises that help plants grow in the garden and remove harmful bugs with the help of pest removing experts. You can also use birdfeeders in your yard to attract birds that feed on these unwanted insects. Try to avoid pesticides as much as you can. Still, if you need to use them, go for a mild solution.

How To Do Gardening Comfortably In Summer?

1) Do the hard work when it is cool outside. Complete chores like mowing before 10 in the morning or after 6 in the evening.
2) Proper intake of water and application of sunscreen is a prerequisite. Make sure to drink water and apply sunblock before you start working.
3) Use your time wisely. If you are short on time, you can still ensure the upkeep of your garden with strategic planning. Think about adding some fresh mulch to your garden or edging the flowerbeds to provide them with the right amount of heat and shade.
